Updated: Monday, August 26 2013, 04:26 PM EDT

Nearly 1.8 million motorists are anticipated to be on the roads in Maryland over the Labor Day weekend according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA).

Between August 30 and September 2 the MDTA expects over 333,000 to travel the Bay Bridge, more than 436,000 to travel I-95 and more than 452,000 to travel the Fort McHenry Tunnel. An additional 550,000 vehicles are expected to travel the Francis Scott Key Bridge (I-695), the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895), the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge (US 40) and the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge (US 301) combined.

Offering traveling tips for the busy holiday weekend, MDTA says the best time to travel the Bay Bridge over the holiday weekend include  between 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday, or before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Due to the Baltimore Grand Prix downtown major delays are expected on I-95 during travel periods, motorists with destinations north or south of the city are urged to use I-895 or I-695 to avoid the downtown area. Portions of I-395 will be closed off between Wednesday, August 28 and Tuesday, September 3.
