13 Baltimore Correctional Officers indicted for facilitating BGF gang

Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:18 PM EDT

A federal indictment was unsealed Tuesday, naming alleged members and associates of the Black Guerrilla Family (BGF) gang who face federal racketeering, drug and money laundering charges. According to the indictment, 25 defendants – including correctional officers and inmates – allegedly engaged in criminal activity in the Baltimore City Detention Center and related facilities.

Of the 25 defendants the indictment alleges 13 are female Baltimore City correctional officers, seven are inmates and five are alleged co-conspirators who were facilitating gang operations from outside the walls. The conspiracy reportedly began in 2009 and was continued to 2013.

The leadership has now been changed at the Baltimore Detention Center, Maryland Secretary of Public Safety & Correctional Services Gary Maynard told press on Tuesday.

The indictment alleges that Tayvon White, the lead defendant, ran the operations of the BGF from behind bars and "corrupted" a number of correctional officers through personal and sexual relationships and other bribes. The correctional officers were allegedly paid by gang members using cash cards. White allegedly purchased "a number of" vehicles while behind bars for correctional officers to use. White has been incarcerated on an attempted murder charge and his third trial is scheduled tomorrow. Two previous trials ended in hung juries.

BGF is a "California gang cancer" that has made its way to Md., Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said during the Tuesday afternoon press conference. "This cancer, BGF, has impacted and caused lives to be lost in the City of Baltimore. We will be relentless at driving them into the ground whether in the prisons or on the streets."

An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
