Doug Gansler Candid Campaign Comments

Updated: Tuesday, August 13 2013, 08:23 PM EDT

In an audio recording from a July 15 meeting Maryland's Attorney General Douglas Gansler said his rival's campaign relies on his race. Gansler can be heard saying Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown's "campaign slogan is 'Vote for me, I want to be the first African American governor of Maryland.'"

Gansler can also be heard saying, "...we’ll announce our lieutenant governor a week or so later. It will be an African-American, and it will be somebody from either Baltimore or Prince George's..."

Gansler's campaign didn't dispute the comments, but accused Brown's campaign of recording the comments illegally. Brown's campaign denies any involvement.

AP contributed to this report.
