A 25-year-old Aberdeen woman has been sentenced to 25-years in prison for First Degree Child Abuse. Kayla Marie Barker was found guilty by a jury in January of abusing her nine month old daughter by repeatedly beating her on the head causing multiple skull fractures.
Barker was sentenced on Thursday, February 27.
According to the Harford County State's Attorney, the defendant inflicted the injuries because the child would not stop crying. Barker then delayed taking the child to the hospital for several hours in an effort to avoid questioning by Child Protective Services. The delay resulted in an additional conviction for Neglect of a Minor, for which a five year sentence was imposed to run concurrently.
The child's paternal aunt has custody of the child and said the now 2-year-old girl has developmental and behavioral problems as a result of the abuse.
