A 42-year-old Mississippi woman was given the surprise of her life last week when after delivering three identical triplets, was told by surprised doctors that there was one more to deliver.
The Clarion Ledger reports that after Kimberly Fugate delivered three healthy babies, as expected, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center on Feb. 8 the doctor looked at her and said "more feet."
The fourth baby, a girl, had been concealed from ultrasound imaging throughout the pregnancy.
According to the Clarion Ledger it was a first in the 27-year career of UMMC's director of maternal-fetal medicine, Dr. James Bofill.
"I was very embarrassed, obviously," Bofill told the Clarion-Ledger. "The news was sent to me by one of my fellows. I thought she was kidding."
He noted that the birth of identical quadruplets is an event of "almost incalculable" odds.
"We've seen quadruplets here before, but we've never seen identical quadruplets," Bofill said. "That's what makes this case so unique and unusual."
Now known as "The Fugate Four," Kenleigh, Kristen, Kaleigh and surprise Kelsey remain at the neonatal intensive care until May since they were born prematurely.
When asked by the Clarion Ledger whether she planned on having more children Fugate replied;
"This. Is. It," she said, smiling.
