A driverless Ford Mustang drifted down a hill in Edgewater, striking and coming to rest on top of a 73-year-old woman on Monday. The driver of the car who ran to retrieve it, then unknowingly ran the woman over again when he put the car in reverse.
It happened Monday afetrnoon on Chesapeake Drive. Police say Lee Sheila Mahoney was walking down the hill when the parked car began to drift down the hill. The vehicle hit Mahoney from behind and came to rest on top of her.
The owner of the vehicle saw his car moving down the hill and ran from a house to get it. The owner caught up to the car, started it and began to back the vehicle up while Ms. Mahoney was underneath. The driver, Adam Garman did not know that there was a person trapped under the car.
Emergency personnel rushed Ms. Mahoney to Anne Arundel Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Police said the preliminary cause of the crash is driver error, as the 23-year-old driver failed to park the vehicle with its wheels turned towards the curb with the parking break set.
The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by members of the Traffic Safety Section. Investigators will be consulting with the State's Attorney's Office.
