OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) -- Ocean City officials say an 18-year-old man is dead from apparent drowning in the Atlantic Ocean.
Beach Patrol Lt. Ward Kovacs said Wednesday that witnesses saw the man caught in a rip current while swimming shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday.
He says lifeguards had gone off duty for the day at 5:30 p.m. and had advised people to stay out of the water.
Kovacs says emergency responders and off-duty lifeguards rescued the man, who later died.
Officials haven't yet released the man's name. City spokeswoman Jessica Waters says she believes he was there with family.
Kovacs says rip currents and dangerous surf conditions linked to Hurricane Cristobal prompted lifeguards to restrict swimmers on Tuesday afternoon to going no deeper than their knees.
He says those restrictions remain in effect.
