Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon now must prepare for the possibility of two separate criminal trials.

Dixon is accused of stealing gift cards intended for needy families and lying about gifts from her former real estate developer boyfriend.

Her lawyers were in court Wednesday to try and have some of the charges against her thrown out.

She faces charges of perjury and theft, but her lawyers elected to delay trial on two counts of perjury.

They argued that prosecutors improperly used Dixon's legislative acts as evidence against her.

But prosecutors say evidence of meetings Dixon attended is not protected by legislative immunity.

Retired Howard County Circuit Court Judge Dennis Sweeney listened to arguments from both sides Wednesday and decided to take the arguments under advisement.

If convicted, Dixon could lose her position as Mayor.
