The suspect arrested in the murder of a woman whose body was found in a north Baltimore manhole has committed suicide while in custody, according authorities.
Baltimore City police had arrested 40-year-old Victor Hernandez Cruz, of Columbia, for choking his girlfriend to death and dumping her body in a manhole in the 500 block of Benninghaus Road.
Cruz was found dead Monday night at the Baltimore City Central Booking and Intake Center, said Mark Vernarelli of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Corrections.
He reportedly hanged himself in his cell.
The victim is identified as Elda Ardorno Vasquez, 30, who had been missing since January of 2008.
Detectives are awaiting autopsy results in Vasquez's death, but they had charged Cruz with first-degree murder.
