Thomas Sanders, 39, a police officer in the Northeast District, is charged with manslaughter. He shot 27-year-old Edward Hunt on January 30, 2008 at the Hamilton Park Shopping Center.
Witnesses have said they saw Sanders shoot Hunt in the back as he ran away.
The defense says Hunt resisted arrest, and the officer shot him to protect himself and the public.
Sanders is expected to take the stand during the trial, which continues Wednesday.
