WBFF - Crime & Justice - Officer on Trial for Manslaughter Takes Stand - Joy Lepola
A Baltimore City Police officer broke down on the witness stand Wednesday as he recounted the night he fatally shot a man in the back.

Thomas Sanders, 39, a police officer in the Northeast District, is on trial for manslaughter.

He shot 27-year-old Edward Hunt on January 30, 2008 at the Hamilton Park Shopping Center.

Witnesses have said they saw Sanders shoot Hunt in the back as he ran away.

As he took the stand in his own defense, Sanders gave an emotional account of the incident.

Sanders said he tried to arrest Hunt for drug possession, but Hunt resisted and ran away.

According to his testimony, Sanders fired shots at Hunt because he thought he was reaching for a gun as he ran away.
