Officer Gahiji Tshamba turned himself in early Sunday morning, more than a day after he was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 32-year-old Tyrone Brown.
Prosecutors say Tshamba opened fire on Brown, shooting him 12 times outside a Mt. Vernon nightclub.
But Defense Attorney Adam Sean Cohen says Tshamba was acting as a police officer when he confronted Brown for groping a woman.
Cohen said the situation escalated and Tshamba acted in self defense because he feared for his life.
If convicted, Tshamba could face the death penalty.
