Mary Koontz is on trial for the first-degree murder of her estranged husband, Ron Koontz, who was shot to death at his Glen Arm home in July 2009. She's also accused of trying to kill her daughter.
During closing arguments Tuesday, the defense said Koontz cannot be held responsible for the crimes because she was too mentally disturbed to understand the criminality of her actions.
Prosecutors concede that Koontz is mentally ill, but they disagree on the severity of her illnesses. They believe Koontz knew what she was doing when she carried out the crimes.
If Koontz is found guilty but not criminally responsible for the crimes, she would be committed to a psychiatric institution.
Jury deliberations are scheduled to resume Wednesday.
