Pier demolished during boat contest

DEAL ISLAND, Md. (AP) -- Somerset County officials say a finger pier was destroyed during a boat docking contest at Deal Island Harbor.

A boat rammed the pier during the Labor Day contest, causing it to collapse. No one was hurt.

The county will get estimates for rebuilding the pier and replacing a piling that snapped in half.

Doug Taylor, director of the Roads Department, which also maintains waterways, officials are considering whether conducting boat docking contests at a public facility is a good idea.
