Report: Baltimore shrinks, but some areas see boom

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A new report says Baltimore's population has shrunk since 2000, but some neighborhoods have experienced a boom.
Vital Signs, an occasional report compiled by the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance, analyzes data from 80 indicators provided by the city's planning department.
The new report -- which uses data from 2008 -- says the city has lost about 3 percent of its residents since 2000. But downtown has grown in population by 22 percent, Loch Raven by more than 8 percent and Northwood by 10 percent.
The report also notes progress in the teen birth rate, which dropped from 93 out of 1,000 10 years ago to 66 in 2008.
