Baltimore police rescued a 17-year-old boy Wednesday who had been abducted while on his way to school and was being held for ransom in a vacant dwelling in Southwest Baltimore.

An officer was on patrol about 9 a.m. Wednesday when he was approached by a man who said his son had been abducted.

During the conversation with police, the man received a telephone call from the suspected kidnappers who threatened the man's son demanded $50,000 and a large quantity of drugs.

Less than an hour later, 911 operators received an anonymous call about a possible abduction in the 100 block of S. Catherine Street.

Officers responded to the vacant house and found the boy being held hostage in the basement.

Police arrested two suspects who tried to flee the scene.

Police identified the pair as Travis Shears, 20, of the 1800 block of N. Fulton St., and Anton Eastman, 19, of the 2900 block of Westwood Ave. They were charged with kidnapping, extortion, assault and false imprisonment.

The boy said his abductors had approached him from behind as he walked to catch a bus on North Avenue, threw a sweatshirt over his head and forced him into a vehicle.Baltimore Teen Held Hostage - Keith Daniels

Proposed Hopkins `science city' breeds skeptics
March 20, 2010 18:41 EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Critics are questioning the benefits of a proposed "science city" near Gaithersburg.

Montgomery County Council member Phil Andrews is among those questioning whether the Johns Hopkins proposal will generate as much revenue for the county as predicted while expressing concerns about its impact on traffic, schools and other infrastructure. A community meeting this month on the proposal drew more than 200.

Johns Hopkins University is leading efforts for the proposed $10 billion live-work community near life sciences office parks already in place. Supporters say the research center could rival North Carolina's Research Triangle or Palo Alto, Calif.
