DON CORNELIUS: NO WORD ON SERVICES
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- There's been no word yet about funeral service or a memorial for Don Cornelius. The family hasn't issued a statement -- and there was no word yesterday from others about plans for how to honor the "Soul Train" founder and host, who died Wednesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Don Cornelius was 75 years old.
CHICAGO (AP) -- While he'll be remembered the world over for bringing black culture to America through "Soul Train," people in Chicago are remembering Don Cornelius as another local guy who went on to make it big outside the Windy City. And last year, when Soul Train marked its 40th anniversary, Chicago threw a big-time celebration for its native son. And Cornelius -- known for his laid-back and above-it-all style -- ate it up. Alderman Walter Burnett says he remembers how Cornelius was thrilled when the city gave him an honorary street sign downtown -- and people showed up at the ceremony in bell bottoms and afro wigs, a throwback to the old-school styles featured on the show. Usually Cornelius would seem as reserved while chatting up a big time celebrity like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin or Marvin Gaye Burnett as the rest of us would talk to the cable guy. But Burnett says at the street sign ceremony, Cornelius let loose. He says the Soul Train host "broke down because he was with his friends."
NEW YORK (AP) -- Ja Rule is making some close friends while behind bars -- and no, we aren't talking about THAT kind of jailhouse relationship. The rapper says while serving his sentence in New York State, he has had the chance to hang out some with two guys who used to have high-powered gigs. He tells the Daily News, he has been getting advice from former New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi (heh-VAY'-see) and ex-Tyco International CEO Dennis Kozlowski (koz-LOWHS'-kee). Both men are serving time along with Ja Rule at the Mid-State Correctional Facility in Oneida (oh-NY'-dah), New York. Ja Rule himself is in for two years on a gun possession case. He tells the Daily News in the outside world, he wouldn't meet guys like that every day. Ja Rule is a high school dropout -- and says both men have urged him to pursue higher education, advice the rap star says he will follow.

AVERY BROOKS: FACING DUI CHARGE IN CONNECTICUT
WILTON, Connecticut (AP) -- It wasn't driving at warp speed. But one of the lead actors on the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" TV series is charged with some warped steering. Avery Brooks is to be arraigned next week in Connecticut state court after his arrest last week in Wilton. He's charged with driving under the influence. Local police say they pulled Avery over after someone complained about his driving. Brooks is 63. He played Captain Sisko on the 1990s "Star Trek" series. He also had the role of Hawk on "Spenser: For Hire" in the 1980s.
"AMERICAN IDOL" STOPS BY ST. LOUIS
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- We won't know for a while how the people voting will feel about him, but the "American Idol" judges couldn't seem to get enough of Johnny Keyser. The Florida resident auditioned in St. Louis -- and when he began singing "A Change Is Gonna Come," the judges didn't want him to stop. They kept asking to keep going -- and going. They finally stopped him long enough to give him a golden ticket. The judges also showed some love to a St. Louis resident who was picked on in school because he was short. Reis Kloeckener (REES KLOK'-en-er) says he was on the verge of dropping out when a teacher heard his singing voice and urged him to get involved in the school choir. He's going on to Hollywood, too.

NAIMA ADEDAPO: FORMER "IDOL" CONTESTANT LANDS RECORD DEAL
NEW YORK (AP) -- An "American Idol" hopeful last year is trying to follow in the footsteps of Jennifer Hudson -- by going on to stardom without taking home the top prize on the TV show. Naima Adedapo (nay-EE'-mah ad-eh-DAH'-poh) is about to drop her first album, after signing a deal with Peak Records. The album will be a while -- but if you want to get a sample of what she's capable of, she's to release a three-song EP next month.
DRAKE/SNOOP DOGG: IN INDIANAPOLIS FOR SUPER BOWL
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The New York Giants and the New England Patriots aren't the only playas who are in Indianapolis this week for Sunday's Super Bowl. The city -- not usually known for its Hollywood-style vibe -- is hosting a bunch of celebrities, along with the teams and the media for the big game. Madonna is doing the game's halftime show. But there's still plenty of spotlight to go around. Drake will be performing at a party hosted by ESPN and hosted by Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. And fellow rappers Snoop Dogg and Nas are expected to be rocking the mic at various parties.
QUESTLOVE: TO PRESENT AT GRAMMYS
SANTA MONICA, California (AP) -- Look for Questlove at the Grammys. He will be one of the presenters at the awards ceremony, set for a week from Sunday. The Roots drummer is on the latest list of performers and hander-outers for Grammy night.

DAVID PEASTON: FORMER R&B SINGER DIES
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- He was the brother of Fontella Bass -- the singer who did the song "Rescue Me" back in the day. But David Peaston went to carve out a name for himself in music, with a series of R&B hits during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Peaston has died. His family says he passed as a result of complications from diabetes. Peaston's biggest hit was "Two Wrongs (Don't Make It Right)," which went as high as number three on Billboard R&B chart in 1989. Other hits included "Can I?" and "We're All in This Together." Peaston had both of his legs amputated below the knees because of his diabetes. He's survived by his wife and two sons.
SECOND MAN TO GRADUATE FROM "OLE MISS" DIES
JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) -- There are people who are known as "the Jackie Robinson" of thus and so because they were the first black person to achieve something in a particular field. Cleveland Donald Junior could be called "the Larry Doby" of the University of Mississippi -- because he was the second black person to graduate from the school, like Doby was the second black man to play in major league baseball. Donald has passed away. He was 65 and died of natural causes. Donald graduated from Ole Miss in 1966 -- four years after James Meredith became the first black to enroll and graduate at the school.
JANET JACKSON: LOOKING BACK
UNDATED (AP) -- On this date in 2004, Janet Jackson apologized for exposing her right breast during a halftime performance at the Super Bowl, saying she was "really sorry" that it happened. In a videotaped statement, she took the blame for what Justin Timberlake described as a "wardrobe malfunction." She said she didn't mean to offend anyone by what she called a "costume reveal" that she said "went wrong in the end."
BAR-KAYS: LOOKING BACK
UNDATED (AP) -- On this date in 1982, the city of Memphis, Tennessee, declared "Bar-Kays Day." The event was in honor of the band that began as Otis Redding's backup group. Several members of the Bar-Kays died in the 1967 plane crash that killed Redding. But surviving members of the group put another band together. They went on to create such hits as "Soul Finger" and "Shake Your Rump to the Funk."
DA LENCH MOB: LOOKING BACK
UNDATED (AP) -- On this date in 1995, J-Dee of the rap group Da Lench Mob was sentenced by a judge in Torrance, California. He got 29 years to life in prison for the shooting death of his girlfriend's roommate. The 26-year-old rapper was convicted of killing 23-year-old Scott "Pearl" Charles after the two argued outside a house party.
PHIL SPECTOR: LOOKING BACK
UNDATED (AP) -- On this date in 2003, authorities arrested producer Phil Spector at his mansion in suburban Los Angeles. The body of actress Lana Clarkson had been found in the foyer. The first trial ended in a hung jury, but Spector was convicted the second time around.
