McIlroy Finished Strong To Widen Lead

Updated: Saturday, July 19 2014, 07:04 PM EDT

HOYLAKE, England (AP) -- Rory McIlroy shot a 4-under 68 to open a six-shot lead after three rounds of the British Open. The Northern Irishman stands at 16-under par for the 54 holes in an attempt to add the claret jug to his trophies for winning the U.S. Open and PGA Championship.

McIlroy was threatened during a dreary day at Royal Liverpool by Rickie Fowler, who pulled into a tie for the lead after birdies on seven of the first 12 holes. But McIlroy snapped the tie by holing a 35-foot birdie putt on 14th hole and added eagles on 16 and 18.

Fowler bogeyed 14 and 16 on the way to a 68 to hold down second place.

Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson are tied for third, seven shots off the lead.

Defending champ Phil Mickelson turned in a 1-under 71 and is 1-under while Tiger Woods shot 73 and is 3-over for the tournament.

Because of the potential for threatening weather, the tournament used two tees and threesomes for the first time in history.
