Youth Football Team Overcomes Adversity With A National Championship Victory

Updated: Tuesday, December 17 2013, 10:23 AM EST

Three Baltimore youth football teams are back after winning national championships in their respective divisions.

This time last year at Maritime High School where the Parskide Warriors play there were plenty of tears, candlelight and sharing of stories after one of its coaches died in a car accident.

Monday night was a celebratory occasion after the Warriors came back champions after playing for the memory of not one, but two coaches killed this season. Coach Carl drowned on a family vacation and Coach Corey White as killed in a head-on motorcycle accident in the Harbor Tunnel on Halloween night.

"He gave us confidence and we're like, 'We're gonna do this for Coach Corey,'" Parkside Warriors Running Back Antwain Banks said.

Parents joined in on the celebration and honored the memory of the coaches.

"Especially the older boys have learned they can't take anything for granted," Parkside Warrior mom Tinika Burris said. "I heard a lot of them say they were doing this for Coach Corey, so it's touching...to hear they carried him with them in spirit, it's wonderful."
